Added on by Ali Beasley.

Just in time for the holidays Frontier today releases the new Elite: Dangerous Alpha Phase 1.1 - Single Player combat, which is an updated version of 1.0 with new stereoscopic 3D features we are testing.

We'd like to thank everyone for their positive feedback on the Alpha test so far. Craig Pearson from the Rock, Paper, Shotgun website got a hands-on look at the Alpha Phase 1.0 build, and you can read his impressions in a detailed piece here.

To get the latest build Alpha backers can simply re-download the Alpha build from the Elite: Dangerous online store as before.  If you want to get involved, access to the ongoing Alpha testing phases can still be purchased from the store.

Alpha Phase 1.1 includes the following in addition to the 1.0 content:
• A selection of stereoscopic 3D support options added
- Oculus Rift
- Side-by-side 3D rendering for use with 3D TVs / monitors
- Anaglyph rendering: old school Red/Cyan rendering for those without Oculus Rift or a 3D TV but with some vintage red/cyan glasses
• Track IR support added
• Dashboard brightness option added
• Improved build stability
• Assorted improvements from Alpha feedback

Have a Happy Holidays! The Elite: Dangerous team is going to take a well-deserved rest now – although there will be people supporting Alpha backers over the holidays - and we’ll be back in the New Year with a bang!

Frontier Announces Elite: Dangerous Premium Beta

Added on by Ali Beasley.

Frontier today announced the delivery date of the next milestone in the development of its forth-coming Elite: Dangerous game.

The Premium Beta effectively starts today, with Premium Beta players able to download a single player combat build of the game. The full Premium Beta will start on 30th May 2014, and until then, players will be able to practise with the single player combat build.

Upgrades are on sale now for anyone who has already pre-ordered the standard Beta or the final game, via this link.

Before the first Premium Beta release, Frontier will release one final Elite: Dangerous Alpha phase, Phase 4, which adds Travel and Trading.

Alpha phase 1 covered the vital moment-to-moment combat and ship controls.

Alpha phase 2 added internet-based multiplayer capability.

Alpha phase 3 expanded on these technology tests to add docking and the first elements of gameplay progression.

Alpha phase 4 expands significantly on this with two modes of faster than light travel - in-system 'super-cruise' and between-system 'hyperspace'.  The full Milky Way galactic map, containing some 400,000,000,000 star systems, will be present. Alpha 4 gameplay is focused on a 200 cubic light year volume of space, far from Earth.

The date and further details of Alpha Phase 4 will be announced shortly.  Alpha contributors get early access to future builds and a lifetime benefit of discounted in-game ship insurance. Elite: Dangerous Alpha access is available for order until 25th April.

David Braben, CEO of Frontier, said:

“The Alpha process has worked well for us. We have gradually built out the key elements of the game, first locally, with single player combat, then with a few thousand players across the internet. On 30th May the Premium Beta extends this to many thousands of players worldwide, with an increasingly rich game.

I want to take this opportunity to thank all those who have played such an important role in Alpha testing, and I’m very happy that we will continue to benefit from their valuable input as they test Beta builds approximately 2 weeks in advance of release.

400 billion star systems are yours to explore in Elite: Dangerous

400 billion star systems are yours to explore in Elite: Dangerous

On 30th May we move into a new phase of Premium Beta testing, and I’m delighted to be able to welcome a significant numbers of new players to Elite: Dangerous today.”

Elite: Dangerous Alpha Phase 2.0 - Multiplayer Released Today

Added on by Ali Beasley.

Today Elite: Dangerous Alpha Phase 2.0 - Multiplayer was released, which provides backers the opportunity to play against each other in four distinct multiplayer scenarios:

  • Free-for-all melee
  • Pick your side in a two-team melee
  • Co-operative defense of a crippled Federal battlecruiser
  • A more sophisticated ‘Pirates and Bounty Hunters’ mode which hints at the fluid choices and roles players will experience on a much greater scale in the final game

Credits can be earned in each scenario and used to purchase new ship loadouts.

Frontier’s Elite: Dangerous Alpha program has been created to engage with the game’s Alpha backers, enabling the team to respond to feedback, add features and balance the game to make it the best it can possibly be. This is an incredibly exciting and important phase in the development of Elite: Dangerous.

Commented David Braben,

"Player stat tracking, the multiplayer networking code and associated management are all big new systems that are being tested with Phase 2.0 plus it’s the first time we’ll be able to test how the game mechanics perform with significant numbers of players all playing simultaneously."

There will be two further major Alpha releases to roll out before Elite: Dangerous reaches Premium Beta stage.

Admission to AIM - First Day of Dealings

Frontier Developments plc (“Frontier” or the “Company”), a leading developer of video games with studios in Cambridge, UK and Halifax, Canada, announces the commencement of dealings in its Ordinary Shares on AIM today. Frontier’s AIM symbol is FDEV and the ISIN number GB00BBT32N39.

The Company has raised £4.0 million (before expenses) through a placing of 3,169,292 new Ordinary Shares (the “Placing”). Frontier’s Market capitalisation at the Placing Price is £39.4 million.

Founded in 1994 by David Braben, co-author of the seminal Elite game, Frontier has an experienced management and development team that has consistently delivered high quality, innovative and commercially successful games in a continually evolving industry.

Frontier’s proprietary “Cobra” technology powers its efficient, cross-platform software development spanning personal computers, tablets, smartphone and videogame consoles across a wide variety of game genres. Frontier has a strong track record of successfully leveraging its software technology in games for several decades, with titles including RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, LostWinds, Kinectimals, Kinect Disneyland Adventures and Coaster Crazy games.

The expansion of games into the mainstream entertainment industry and advent of digital distribution on all platforms brings significant opportunity and the funds raised will allow Frontier to expand its current business and add further technology extensions and developments to proprietary software development platform Cobra.

Cobra development will be undertaken in conjunction with development of Elite: Dangerous, in a move that will enable Frontier to ultimately license key elements of its technology and related services to third parties.

Admission to AIM (“Admission”) follows a pre-IPO fundraising that raised £2.8 million. Frontier is debt free, has £7.2 million of cash (as at 31 May 2013), and has entered into a revolving credit facility with Barclays Bank plc for £3.0 million, so is in a strong position to take its business to the next stage.

Canaccord Genuity is the Nominated Adviser and Broker to Frontier and acted as sole Bookrunner to the Placing.

David Braben, Frontier Developments CEO, said:

I am delighted by the level of support Frontier has received and by the calibre of our investors, whose participation in our IPO is a strong endorsement of the growth potential we have identified.

Frontier’s admission to AIM, along with the funding we secured earlier this year, will support our efforts to further enhance the capabilities of our technology platform Cobra as the expansion of games into the mainstream entertainment industry and advent of digital distribution provide significant opportunity to generate further growth.”

Frontier Developments

Frontier was founded in 1994 by David Braben, co-author of the seminal Elite game. The Group has around 227 full-time employees and operations in Cambridge, UK and Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. Frontier has a proven track record of software technology development and innovation spanning several decades of rapid technological change. Frontier has exploited its technology to develop innovative videogames across a wide variety of different game genres and platforms, and has established relationships with globally renowned partners.

At the end of 2012, Frontier raised £1.6 million via Kickstarter, the crowd funding service, and its own site. The funds were raised specifically to develop Elite: Dangerous - the latest iteration of the Elite game that CEO David Braben originally co-authored in 1982 and was published in 1984. Elite was one of the first home computer games to use 3D graphics and the first to employ an open-world ‘sandbox’ gameplay model. Its revolutionary 3D graphics ensured that the game created the modern space flight simulation genre and influenced gaming as a whole. Cobra

Frontier’s Cobra software technology has been developed and evolved since 1988. Initially conceived as a solution for the problem of easily porting the same game across different target hardware devices, Cobra today supports multi-core CPU and GPU architectures of PC, console, tablet and smartphone with a modular, high performance system offering of state of the art efficiency and visual fidelity that is applicable across a wide range of game genres.

Cobra incorporates a framework which enables rapid development of powerful game creation tools, which offer the ability to view, tweak and review changes to content (e.g. animations, audio, 3D models etc) on target platforms in a live game session running on that platform, without the intervention of a programmer.

Elite Returns via Kickstarter with Elite: Dangerous

Added on by Ali Beasley.

High-end, Multi-player Sequel to the Classic Open-world Space Trading / Combat Games Featuring Multi-Player and More to be Released Early 2014

Elite: Dangerous Logo

6th November 2012, Cambridge, UK. David Braben’s Frontier Developments has launched a Kickstarter UK project Elite: Dangerous on PC.

This is the game I have wanted Frontier to make for a very long time. The next game in the Elite series - an amazing space epic with stunning visuals, incredible gameplay and breath-taking scope, and also fully multi-player.” said Frontier founder and CEO David Braben. “Frontier has been working on this project, in the background, for several years now, building a foundation of technology and tools. Imagine what is now possible, squeezing the last drop of performance from modern computers in the way the previous games did in their days? It is not only a question of raw performance, though of course this will make it a gorgeous and incredibly rich experience, but we are pushing the multi-player networking implementation too.”

David Braben co-authored “Elite”, which was one of the most successful games of the 1980s, being the first ‘open world’ game, the first true 3D game which also set many other benchmarks. It made extensive use of procedural generation of content to fit eight galaxies each with 256 star systems and associated planets, economies. legal systems and so on into 22k bytes, less than the size of a typical email today. His “Frontier” sequel, which his company is named after, greatly pushed such techniques further, containing a model of the whole of the Milky Way galaxy with all 1011 or so star systems, and many more planets and moons, each of which players could visit. Frontier is using Kickstarter both as a means of test-marketing the concept to verify there is broader interest in such a game, extending beyond the fans and press who regularly contact David about the game, and raising £1.25M / $2M funds to complete it. “Kickstarter is great because as long as we hit the threshold, it commits us to making the game.” added Braben. “From where we are now, £1.25M/$2M will get us the minimum game based on our tech and artist-directed procedural generation techniques, but I am of course hoping we can get more than that as it will allow us to be even more ambitious and potentially cover other platforms - the community of contributors will be part of the discussion about the specifics of any such decisions.” Be part of it:. www.kickstarter.com/projects/1461411552/elite-dangerous
